ESSENCE on Health Research is an initiative by funding organizations to improve the coordination and harmonization of research capacity investments. ESSENCE members embrace the principles of donor harmonization and country alignment. According to these principles, donors align and harmonize their activities and procedures with the priorities of the countries in which they work. To achieve this goal, ESSENCE members agreed to jointly develop and produce good practice documents that would incorporate current knowledge and best practices on health research and development issues.
Two such good practice documents have been recently published, adding to four previously produced. TDR is proud to continue to be the Secretariat and key member of the initiative and help shape global approaches to key topics that facilitate improved research capacity and research activity in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The new documents are:
- Five keys to improving research costing and pricing in low- and middle-income countries – this is an update to the original 2012 version of the document which includes updated policies and approaches to costing of research in LMICs. The document is available in English, French and Spanish
- Seven approaches to investing in implementation research in low- and middle- income countries – the document is unique in its guidance to how best to invest, nurture and use implementation research for health which is of increased importance in the context of LMICs health system challenges
