Control and elimination of diseases of poverty

Tuberculosis, malaria and neglected tropical diseases disproportionally affect the poorest and most vulnerable. TDR supports research that leads to integrated, holistic approaches to elimination – reducing the burden of disease and building resilient health systems.

We support work that crosses the disciplines of human, animal and environmental health and promote the importance of applying an intersectional gender lens to infectious disease research.

Featured research activities

Malaria research

TDR’s support for malaria research focuses on helping low- and middle-income countries scale up their efforts to address malaria and prevent illness and deaths among the most vulnerable, including pregnant women and children.

Neglected tropical diseases research

TDR is committed to supporting WHO’s road map for neglected tropical diseases 2021–2030 and is supporting implementation research on NTDs such as onchocerciasis (river blindness), schistosomiasis, visceral leishmaniasis and skin NTDs.

TDR aims to contribute to the End TB effort by supporting implementation research activities and enhancing capacity for implementation research at national, regional and global levels.

Multisectoral and One Health approaches to vector-borne diseases

TDR delivers sustainability through multisectoral partnerships and a One Health approach to research. The aim is to catalyse a move beyond disease-focused interventions towards a more holistic integration of health, environment and development through active engagement of relevant stakeholders.

Postgraduate training scheme

In collaboration with eight universities in LMICs, this training programme focuses on building capacity on implementation research on major global health challenges including control and elimination of diseases of poverty.

Implementation research case example: Chagas in Ecuador

This MOOC module offers a comprehensive exploration of the strategies employed to address the challenges posed by Chagas disease, a neglected tropical disease prevalent in Latin America.

Current Master’s of Public Health students at Senegal’s Université Cheikh Anta Diop, supported by TDR, at an implementation research workshop earlier this year.

Regional training centres

TDR-supported regional training centres, located in all WHO regions, conduct virtual and in-person courses on implementation research to address global health challenges, including control and elimination of diseases of poverty.
