Guidelines for analysis of REMO data using GIS
Report of an Informal Consultation, Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, 3-6 September, 1996
Overview
These guidelines were prepared following an informal consultation on the analysis and interpretation of Rapid Epidemiological Mapping of Onchocerciasis (REMO) using a Geographical Information System (GIS). The meeting was hosted by the Onchocerciasis Control Programme in West Africa (OCP) in conjunction with the African Programme for Onchocerciasis Control (APOC), sponsored by TDR, and with technical assistance from WHO/UNICEF Joint Programme for Health Mapping (HealthMap).
The aim of the consultation was to develop a methodology for the analysis of REMO data and the identification of priority areas for community-directed treatment with ivermectin. The resulting guidelines are aimed at assisting onchocerciasis control personnel in the interpretation and application of REMO results.
The guidelines first describe the preparatory work needed for analysis of REMO data. This is followed by a detailed description of the REMO analysis itself, with case studies and maps given as examples. Annexes provide step-by-step instructions for the creation of new data files and maps, and include helpful computer screen shots. A list of participants is also given.
