Priorities for tuberculosis research: a report of the disease reference group on TB, leprosy and buruli ulcer

Overview

This report identifies research priorities for tuberculosis in the following thematic areas:

  • epidemiology and control;
  • health systems and operational research;
  • case-finding and infection control;
  • HIV-associated tuberculosis, vaccines, new drugs and diagnostics; and
  • social science and gender.

It was developed by the TDR Disease reference group on TB, leprosy and Buruli ulcer.

The TB Research Movement independently conducted a similar exercise to identify research priorities for TB using a different approach and results were shared with the disease reference group. Reassuringly, there is substantial agreement and complementarity between the two respective sets of research priorities identified for TB, and the International Roadmap for TB research included priorities that were identified by the TDR process. The present report includes only the research priorities identified by the TDR process.
