News release
Reading time:

To support the generation of evidence from local research for the prevention and control of infectious diseases of poverty in low- and middle-income countries, ten Impact Grants for Regional Priorities have been awarded following a call for applications jointly issued by TDR and WHO’s Regional Office for Europe.

The Impact Grants for Regional Priorities support researchers and public health practitioners as part of TDR’s collaboration with all WHO regional offices. This programme emphasizes the importance of using implementation and operational research and linking healthcare delivery and disease control programmes with research and institutions. The specific objectives of the Impact Grants are to:

-strengthen the research capacity of relevant individuals and institutions in countries;
-generate new knowledge, solutions and implementation strategies that countries can apply for the control and elimination of infectious diseases; and
-encourage intersectoral dialogue and a One Health approach.

In total, 36 applications were submitted from six countries within the European region. Each of the ten grant recipients will receive up to US$15 000 for their research project. The duration of each grant will be up to 12 months. Astana Medical University in Kazakhstan is the implementing partner for the Impact Grants in this region.

The selected projects cover a diverse range of topics, including the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections, the impact of climate change on vulnerable populations, and the management of co-infections such as TB/HIV. The grants will enable researchers from various institutions across the region to conduct studies that will provide valuable insights and inform public health interventions.

The selected grant recipients and their research projects are listed in the table below:

TDR congratulates all the grant recipients and looks forward to the impactful research outcomes that will contribute to the health and well-being of populations in the European Region.
