Biography

Dr David Soeiro Barbosa is a Faculty Member and Researcher at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) and a Productivity in Research Fellow from the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), Brazil. He is a leading expert in the epidemiology of transmissible diseases and public health.

Dr Barbosa holds a degree in Veterinary Medicine from the State University of Maranhão. His advanced academic training includes Master's and PhD degrees in Public Health Epidemiology from the Sergio Arouca National School of Public Health, Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (ENSP/FIOCRUZ), in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His doctoral studies included an international collaboration at the Harvard School of Public Health and an exchange program with the Department of Control of Neglected Tropical Diseases at the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva. He further enriched his international experience through a postdoctoral fellowship as a visiting professor at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (2020).

He coordinates the Laboratory of Epidemiology of Infectious and Parasitic Diseases at UFMG. He is a professor and supervisor for graduate programs in Parasitology and Public Health at UFMG, both regarded for their international excellence. His research portfolio addresses critical issues in tropical neglected diseases, zoonoses, and emerging public health challenges, including Leishmaniasis (Visceral and Cutaneous), Arboviruses (Dengue, Chikungunya, Zika, and Yellow Fever), Malaria, COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2), Schistosomiasis, Sporotrichosis, Chagas disease, Tuberculosis, Rabies, and Leptospirosis. His expertise encompasses transmissible disease epidemiology, veterinary preventive medicine, public health, one health, climate change, parasitology, and advanced analytical methods such as spatial analysis, systematic reviews, and meta-analysis. He has authored over 70 scientific publications and has advised numerous undergraduate and graduate students, as well as supervised postdoctoral researchers. He currently coordinates the research group “Epidemiology and control of transmissible diseases and public health events” and previously coordinated the group 'Epidemiology and Control of Neglected Tropical and Zoonotic Diseases' (2018-2022). both certified by CNPq/Brazil and is committed to science education and the popularization of scientific knowledge.

He is an active contributor to global health initiatives, notably as a Global Assessor for the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (2025) and a member of the editorial board for PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases (2019 - current). His academic life includes his role as an evaluator for the Brazilian Ministry of Education and participation in key technical advisory committees for the Brazilian Ministry of Health.  He is also the current President of the Brazilian Association of One Health (ABRASUNI).

His career has been marked by several awards, including the Carlos Chagas Award, the Jeffrey Shaw Award for Epidemiology, Control, and Public Health, and the Aluísio Prata Medal, recognizing his impact on scientific knowledge and public health practice.
