Jonathan Underwood

Jonathan is the Lead in the Major International Programmes team which works within the Wellcome Equity Department and in partnership with our Departments for Discovery, Solutions, Policy and Partnerships, to fund and engage with eight institutions in Africa, South and Southeast Asia. These include: health research institutions in Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, Thailand, Vietnam and their regions; the India Alliance, a health-research funding collaboration with the Indian government; and the Science for Africa Foundation, which funds excellence in health research, training and leadership through consortia across the continent.  We are currently developing a new fund-the-funder programme in Southeast Asia. 

Jonathan’s remit also includes engaging with the wider health research ecosystem, to share Wellcome’s vision and strategy, which is to support science to solve the urgent health challenges facing everyone, and to learn from partners and stakeholders how best to achieve this in their contexts.
