Paul Simon Gwakisa, PhD, is Professor of Immunology at Sokoine University of Agriculture, the United Republic of Tanzania. He leads a research group in the Genome Science Centre, whose interest is on vector-borne diseases.
His 33+ years of academic research experience have contributed significant attributes of the relationships between people, livestock, disease and rural livelihoods within human-livestock-wildlife interface ecosystems.
He is passionate about building the capacity of the next generation of African scientists and has supervised over 50 postgraduate (MSc and PhD) students.
With a record of over 90 peer-reviewed publications, Dr Gwakisa has served as principal investigator for numerous internationally won competitive grants including the WHO/IDRC/TDR project (2013-2018) titled ‘Reducing vulnerabilities to vector-borne diseases in Maasai communities in the Maasai steppe: an eco-health approach.’
Currently, he is one of the principal investigators of a collaborative effort of four African research groups, leading a project under the TDR research initiative on ‘Operationalizing One Health for Vector-Borne Diseases in the Context of Climate Change in Africa.’
