Paola Abril Campos Rivera

Biography

Abril is a research professor of health policy with extensive experience in health policy implementation in low- and middle-income countries and applied political analysis for health reform. Before joining Tecnológico de Monterrey, Abril helped set up the Delivery for Impact Unit at WHO in Geneva. There, she tracked global efforts to meet health-related Sustainable Development Goals, especially Universal Health Coverage, and supported regional and country offices in driving country impact by adopting a delivery approach.

Abril earned her Doctor of Public Health degree from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health; and holds a bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of Pennsylvania. She was born in Mexico City, studied two years in India in the Mahindra United World College, and has lived and worked in the US, Switzerland, Kazakhstan, Ghana, India and Mexico.

As the Health Operations Manager at the Carlos Slim Foundation, Abril worked on strengthening primary healthcare nationwide by improving information systems, training healthcare providers, and helping the Ministry of Health monitor quality of care indicators. She has also served as an advisor at the Office of the President of Mexico, working on policy analysis and media communications. Earlier, while working at Innovation for Poverty Action, Abril managed a randomized controlled trial to test a nurse-led strategy for reducing intimate partner violence in Mexico City’s health centers.
