Mariam is a social scientist, expert on gender, intersectionality and infectious disease implementation research committed to advancing public health research, equity in evidence generation, and leveraging social science to inform the global health research agenda with an intersectional lens. An Economist specialized in Development Studies, Public Health and Behavioural Science, from the University of the Basque Country, her current research-related activities focus on AMR under a changing climate, health research ethics, developing equitable gender responsive infectious disease research studies, strengthening research capacities and engaging the infectious disease research community to integrate sex and gender dimensions more thoughtfully into health research and the global health R&D policy. Mariam is also a Human Rights Lawyer from the University Carlos III de Madrid with expertise in women's human rights and gender equality, and an expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
Mariam joined the World Health Organization in 2010 and TDR in 2017, after working in various Southern African countries and other UN sister agencies, serving both as an expert on mission and leading social research with a specific focus on women and adolescents health, particularly related to HIV, TB and Malaria.
With more than 18 years of experience in gender and infectious disease research, social and environmental determinants of health and research capacity strengthening, Mariam is also leading TDR’s efforts to implement its recent intersectional gender research strategy.
